The colors and images on the left, above, are the base colors, which are the colors that were already there, and are the ones on the layer under the one where blend modes were chosen. The colors and images one the right, above, are the blend colors, which are the colors were added and which were on the uppermost layer. These were blended with the base colors on the left. If you were choosing a blend mode for a painting tool, the concepts would be the same. The colors already in the image are the base colors, and the color you would be applying with your painting tool would be the blend colors. The areas in the blend colors layer, at right, which are transparent (showing gray and white checkerboard) were unaffected by the blend modes chosen, as there is no color there to blend. Therefore, the apple on the base layer, and the first three color cubes on the bottom row of the base layer remain unchanged and can be used for comparison to the areas which have been blended.
