Here is what you get direct from the scanner after you choose Image > Adjust > Invert. Yuk. First the funny color has to go. Choose Image > Adjust > Desaturate. This removes the pinkish color of the film base.

Then I used Image > Adjust > Brightness and Contrast. My settings were minus 40 percent brightness and plus 40 percent contrast.
