Scanning Negatives

page one
This negative was scanned into Photoshop from a flatbed scanner without a transparency attachment. However, you do need to have some decent software to manage your scanner. I tried it with Pagis Pro and couldn't get anything. What you see was done with SilverFast.
This picture is a particular favorite of one of my sisters as well as several other people. Not only have they taken all my prints of it, they cut the image out of its contact print, so I have no positive copy of it. Not that I want one. It's an awful picture, on artistic merits. But the heathen population is more interested in other things.

You will have to experiment with your scanners settings to get a usable image into Photoshop. I ended up with the settings at plus 32 percent brightness, plus 50 percent highlights (max.), minus 20 percent midtones (max.) and minus 50 percent shadows (also max.).
