Using Curves

The feature, Curves, is found by choosing Layer > New > Adjustment Layer and choosing Curves from the dialog box that opens.

Curves can be a lot of fun to play with. Sometimes it can really save an image. It can surely show you new and different interpretations of your tones.

With this picture, I wanted to make the thin shadow along the left side of the right foot really black while not losing the detail in the darker areas where the toes join the foot. I also wanted to push the brighter areas in the skin up a little. The bright area in the background-top needs to be kept from becoming too bright.

Please note that these v. 5.5 tutorials are not my best. I knew a lot less then than I do now. I leave them up because a lot of people are still using v. 5.5.
