Adjusting Contrast

page three
Now we need to do something about her face. You can't see it very well because the tones are so flat and dark. Especially the eyes. Go to Layer > New > Adjustment Layer, and choose Curves in the dialog box that opens.
adjustment layer's dialog box showing curves
I have put four dots on the curve. Pressing Ctrl while clicking on the image places a dot on the corresponding spot on the curve. I located the values for 1) the darkest area between her eyes, which I wanted to keep dark. I have taken this dot (lowest and farthest left) down a little, 2) in her eyes, which I wanted to lighten up a little. This is the second dot from the bottom. I have pulled it up a little.

The middle dot was put there to keep the curve from bowing upwards. I wanted the contrast normal at that section. The top dot was used to bring the highlights down just a tiny bit.
You can see what you are doing if you move the curves screen down out of the way. Find the tones you want to separate and put your dots there. Than play with them. Put more dots elsewhere to keep the rest of the curve from going haywire. If things get out of hand, just click ‘Cancel’.
Next I want to work on the foreground stuff on either side of her paws. Once again, I'm going to use a Quick Mask. Same technique as before.
