Select the elliptical marquee tool from the toolbox. It’s hidden under the rectangular marquee tool; find it in the pop-up menu under that one.

Check the options bar to at the top of your screen to be sure the New Selection button is chosen. It’s number one in the illustration below.

Also, be sure the Style option on the options bar is set to Normal
Drag a round selection around the head of the pet, or person that you are interested in putting on your letterhead. If your selection is not centered where you want it, hold down the spacebar, without letting go of the left mouse button, and move the selection into place.
Once you have the selection outline where it should be, release the mouse button. Choose Selection > Feather from the menu bar. Enter a value of 60 px in the box that appears. The size of the feather needed to get the results shown below depends on the image resolution. This is a twenty percent feather, so at 72 dpi, you would get the same results with a 15 px feather.

Choose the move tool in the toolbox. Press the Alt key. Position the move tool within the selection outline, and, with the Alt key still pressed down, drag the selection onto the new, white document that you just created.
The selection contents will disappear momentarily as you cross over to the other document, but will reappear when you release the mouse button.
Items dragged to a new image in this way are always added as a new layer. So, the item that you just dragged onto the white page is now on its own layer. You can see it in the Layers palette. To edit the image, you will need to be sure that its layer is selected.
Use the move tool to position the layer at the top of the page. You can use the arrow keys to move it in one pixel increments if you have trouble dragging it to a precise location.
When you have the image placed where you want it, deselect it by choosing Select > Deselect, or by pressing Ctrl-D.
Below, is an approximation of the final results. I’ve added a black outline to give an idea of the page width, and cropped off the bottom of the page to save space. However, this should print out at the very top of the page. You will get a warning when you go to print it, “The image is larger than the paper’s printable area: some clipping will occur.” Click Proceed, and it will then print.

I have created several very silly letterheads, next. They’re good practice, and you’ll learn several new techniques, in addition to having fun.
