6.0 Color Correction

page four
Save this image. If your selection square is still active, choose Select > Deselect, or press Ctrl + D.
Print out a copy on the printer that you'd like to find a correction for. With the printed copy in hand, reopen the original image. Compare the printed copy to the screen image. If the original square in the center of the printout doesn't match, but the + blue one does, you'll know that, in the future, you need to add one click of blue in Variations to your images before you print them out.
If none of the variations quite matches the screen image, but several of them are improvements, you can go back and refine your test.
Try creating full length selection strips, and applying smaller variations (see the second illustration, below). Print again, and compare the printout to your on-screen image. Eventually, you should be able to create a printed image that looks nearly the same as the screen version. Write down the variations you used to get the match. Then, in the future, apply that same recipe to any image printed out on that printer.

Above is an example of how to do a follow-up test. I made horizontal strips across the entire image, and applied the variations that looked most promising in the first printout.
Below, you see the little slider found in the Variations dialog box that determines how much tone change is done at each click of More Green, or Darker. The default setting is at the midpoint. Moving it to the the Fine end will give more subtle changes. Be sure and make note of where it's set during all your tests.
When you're all finished, choose the rectangular marquee tool and reset its options bar's Style to be Normal.. Otherwise, you'll be wondering why you can only select two inch squares. I would also recommend choosing View > Snap, and turning that off. I keep mine turned off. If you want to get the guides off your image, choose View > Clear Guides.
