East coast landscapes can be difficult to do in summer because the humidity creates so much haze. I usually end up pushing the film to try and generate some separation between the tones of the distant forms. As a result the foreground ends up too contrasty and the sky can be quite grainy.

I don’t like a sky without clouds. But, contrary to what your photography teacher will tell you, a landscape without anything in the near foreground is just fine. It has become such a dogma that you have something, anything, there, that the obligatory fringe of tree branches hanging into the frame just makes me think of cheap postcards.
The horizontal frame in the next to last strip is one of my favorite landscapes. It is very simple and has beautiful lines. The one to the right of it doesn’t work as well because the clouds aren’t as nice.
