Contact Sheets

page one
There is a book called “Contact Theory,” unfortunately, now out of print, put out by Lustrum Press and edited by Ralph Gibson. In it, forty-three photographers, including, among others, Robert Adams, Judy Dater, Robert Mapplethorpe, Mary Ellen Mark and Gibson, himself, show their contact sheets from which came a finished print.
As a young aspiring photographer, I found this book incredibly encouraging because many of these outtakes were worse than mine!

Technotes
This proof sheet is not too bad. I didn’t want to lose all my credibility on page one. You will have noticed that two of the negative strips are upside-down. Not unusual for me. The main challenge of these pictures was getting the relationship of the two pears just right; touching, not touching, about to touch, at just what angle?
The photos were made in open shade on old, fairly solid snow. In a full print you can see detail and texture in the snow.
Next sheet, landscapes
