Abstracts I

The black and white abstract images that I spend most of my time making are very hard to do successfully. The good ones are wonderful, but the bad ones are spectacularly awful. There are also quite a few near misses that are interesting, but still failures.
I have found that some of these failed abstracts can work very well as filler, or background when doing composites, collage, or photomontage. If you are trying to create a bizarre, surreal, violent, or menacing atmosphere in your artwork, these photographs may help.
You can lower their opacity, mask them, filter them, or otherwise manipulate them. Those of you who do composite images will, hopefully, see the possibilities. Those of you who don’t will be wondering what the heck these images are supposed to be. They are not examples of my work. They are here for you to use as filler material for piecing together multiple images.
All of these pictures were made with large format cameras. The first eleven were made with an eight by ten view camera, and the last nine were made with a four by five. The images were scanned from contact prints (proofs) of the negatives, and I did not crop, or retouch them at all.
The larger images, accessed by clicking on a thumbnail, are maximum quality JPEGs, and average approximately 30 seconds download time at 28.8 KBS. To download, go to the page with the larger image, and right click on the image.
There are twenty four more of these in the second section, Abstracts II.
